Wood Bedroom Furniture Tariffs Reduced
By Harold Zassenhaus, WMMA® Export Director, zemg@erols.com
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced an "Amended Preliminary Anti-Dumping Duty Determination" on Chinese wooden bedroom furniture due to
"significant ministerial errors made in margin calculations". As a result, several Chinese manufacturers who were originally facing 198% tariffs will now face only 10.92% rates,
while only two manufacturers saw their margins increase.
The impact of this determination is not yet apparent as export numbers to China for the first five months of 2004 continue to exhibit substantial growth. However,
some Chinese furniture producers have noted that they are gradually changing the focus of their export promotion away from the U.S. and towards Europe. The full impact of this
determination will become apparent as export statistics are posted for the second half of 2004.
